Newton’s FIRST Green Real Estate: We’re Doing the Right Thing!

Hello from Newton, Massachusetts! We are a small real estate company with something to say. We have made the decision to do the right thing by becoming a more environmentally friendly company. First, we recognize the amount of change an individual can make by being more conscious of the world around us. As a company of individuals, we have even more influence—and we want put our full efforts towards having a positive effect in our community.

Second, like many of you, we are just beginning to learn what environmentally conscious choices and possibilities are out there. The new array of advice, web sites, ‘green’ products and ‘eco’ services is overwhelming. There are so many questions. Who is trustworthy? Where are the facts best represented? What do all the new eco-labels mean? And how do we compare, to make sure our choices truly make the least environmental impact?

As we sort out answers, we want to share our journey with you. When we figure out choices and decisions that work, you’ll share them with us.

We also think you’ll be interested in seeing how a small company makes the leap into being more environmentally conscious. And, we think you’ll like watching how a we, as a real estate business, translate being green into everyday challenges of assessing, selling, and representing homes. How will being green effect our services? Will it effect who we represent? And of much interest: how will our customers react?

We’ve begun by trying to define our shared values, in conjuncton with reading some research out there. We also want to know what doing the right thing means when you work for profit. So we’ve looked at green values papers and sites like:

GREEN VALUES

A comprehensive green business site: www.greenbiz.com

Green Living Tips: www.greenlivingtips.com. And they have a great article on the Triple Bottom Line Theory at www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/264/1/Triple-bottom-line.html

Paul M. J. Suchecki writes wonderful articles for eHow on “How to Run a Green Small Business.” There are 8 parts so far! The first installment is at www.ehow.com/how_2032033_run-green-small-business-part.html

Lastly, but not least we’ve looked at Nellie Lide’s “How to Turn Your Existing Business Green” published at www.smallbiztrends.com/2007/10/how-to-turn-your-existing-business-green.html

Thanks to all of the authors for such helpful writing!

GREENING YOUR BUSINESS

Next, we’ve begun looking at models of green companies, web sites and blogs (which is a daunting task).

Here are a couple examples of great green web sites:

One of the few (brave) green real estate companies out there: www.greenkeyrealestate.com

A large, well-known company: www.seventhgeneration.com

and a nice blog example is: www.greenlinecafe.com/peru
